The modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896 and now alternate Winter and Summer editions every two years. Milano Cortina hosted the Winter Games in February 2026; Los Angeles holds the Summer Games in 2028, the French Alps the 2030 Winter Games, and Brisbane the 2032 Summer Games. The Games open with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron and the Parade of Nations, and close two weeks later after the medals are won. Between editions, the Olympic flame is carried in a relay to the host city.
