How many days until Nowruz 2027?

People ask this one constantly, and the honest answer is “it depends on what day you’re reading this.” A countdown only means something against a clock. So here is a live one — it reads your device clock and ticks every second toward 1 Farvardin 1406.

The exact date: Sunday, 21 March 2027

Nowruz is always 1 Farvardin, the first day of the Persian (Jalali / Solar Hijri) calendar. For the year 1406, that day lands on 21 March 2027 on the Gregorian calendar, and it’s a Sunday. If you’re counting from the middle of 2026, you’re looking at roughly 270-some days — the timer above has the precise figure down to the second.

Why not just memorize “Nowruz = 21 March” and be done? Because it isn’t fixed. Some years it’s the 20th. The new year is pinned to an astronomical event, not a calendar square, so it drifts.

Why the date moves between the 20th and 21st

The Persian calendar ties 1 Farvardin to the spring equinox — the instant the Sun crosses the celestial equator, measured at Iran’s reference meridian. A full cycle of the seasons runs about 365.2422 days, not a clean 365. So the equinox creeps roughly six hours later each year, then snaps back about a day whenever a leap day gets added.

That’s the whole story behind the wobble. Here’s how it plays out across nearby years:

Persian New YearGregorian dateWeekday
Nowruz 140421 March 2025Friday
Nowruz 140521 March 2026Saturday
Nowruz 140621 March 2027Sunday
Nowruz 140720 March 2028Monday
Nowruz 140820 March 2029Tuesday

Notice 2027 sits in a run of 21st-of-March years, then it falls back to the 20th in 2028. That’s the equinox drift doing its thing. If you want the mechanics in full, I wrote them up in why Nowruz isn’t always on the same Gregorian day.

You don’t need a widget to work out the gap, but it’s faster than reaching for a calendar. Two ways to do it on this site:

Both run entirely on your device, so there’s nothing to wait on.
