Is the date on your Afghan document solar or lunar?
On this pageدر این صفحه
Afghan documents carry dates from two different Hijri calendars. Both count from the same event, so both produce year numbers in the 1300s and 1400s — and reading one as the other moves the date by about four decades.
The same day, four ways
| System | Year | As written |
|---|---|---|
| Gregorian (Miladi) | 2026 | 15 September 2026 |
| Solar Hijri, Afghan names | 1405 | 24 Sunbula 1405 |
| Solar Hijri, Iranian names | 1405 | 24 Shahrivar 1405 |
| Lunar Hijri | 1448 | 4 Rabi’ al-Thani 1448 |
Three of those four are the same instant expressed differently. Only the year numbers differ, and only between solar and lunar.
The month name is the tell
This is the whole method, and it is reliable because the two name sets share nothing:
| Solar Hijri (Afghan) | Solar Hijri (Iranian) | Lunar Hijri |
|---|---|---|
| Hamal | Farvardin | Muharram |
| Sawr | Ordibehesht | Safar |
| Jawza | Khordad | Rabi’ al-Awwal |
| Saratan | Tir | Rabi’ al-Thani |
| Asad | Mordad | Jumada I |
| Sunbula | Shahrivar | Jumada II |
| Mizan | Mehr | Rajab |
| Aqrab | Aban | Sha’ban |
| Qaws | Azar | Ramadan |
| Jadi | Dey | Shawwal |
| Dalwa | Bahman | Dhu al-Qi’dah |
| Hut | Esfand | Dhu al-Hijjah |
If the month is a zodiac sign or a Persian month, the date is solar. If it is Ramadan or Muharram, it is lunar. The Afghan-to-Iranian mapping is in Afghan month names.
What guessing wrong costs
A bare year with no month is genuinely ambiguous, and the penalty is large:
| Year on document | Read as solar | Read as lunar | Error |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1340 | 21 Mar 1961 – 20 Mar 1962 | 4 Sep 1921 – 23 Aug 1922 | ~40 years |
| 1370 | 21 Mar 1991 – 20 Mar 1992 | 13 Oct 1950 – 2 Oct 1951 | ~41 years |
| 1385 | 21 Mar 2006 – 20 Mar 2007 | 3 May 1965 – 21 Apr 1966 | ~41 years |
| 1405 | 21 Mar 2026 – 20 Mar 2027 | 26 Sep 1984 – 15 Sep 1985 | ~42 years |
A birth year misread in that direction turns a twenty-year-old into a sixty-year-old.
The gap is growing, not closing
It is often said the two counts are converging. For the year numbers, the opposite is true:
| Gregorian | Solar | Lunar | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1800 | 1179 | 1215 | 36 |
| 1900 | 1279 | 1318 | 39 |
| 2000 | 1379 | 1421 | 42 |
| 2026 | 1405 | 1447 | 42–43 |
| 2100 | 1479 | 1524 | 45 |
A lunar year is roughly eleven days shorter than a solar one, so the lunar count gains about a year every 33. The gap has widened by nine years since 1800 and will keep widening.
What does narrow is a different quantity — the difference between the Gregorian year and the lunar Hijri year. Those two are often confused, which is probably where “converging” comes from.
Why the date on the document may not be a real date at all
Worth knowing before you convert anything. Country-of-origin research describes the Afghan paper tazkira as frequently not carrying a complete date of birth. Norway’s Landinfo, in its May 2019 report on Afghan tazkeras, passports and ID documents, notes that date and year must be established rather than simply read off. A 2011 research response from Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board quotes a Canadian High Commission official describing a date of birth that is assigned rather than recorded.
That has a practical consequence which is easy to get backwards: if a document shows both a Hijri and a Gregorian date, a careful conversion may legitimately disagree with the printed pair, because the printed pair was estimated rather than converted. A mismatch is not proof you made an arithmetic error.
This page is about reading what is printed. It is not advice on what to enter on any form — for that, the issuing authority or a qualified adviser is the right source.
One thing this converter will not do
It handles the two civil calendars: solar Hijri and Gregorian. It does not convert lunar Hijri dates.
That is deliberate. Lunar month starts depend on crescent sighting, so a lunar date can legitimately differ by a day between authorities, and the site’s accuracy claim rests on arithmetic that is fully determined. Where lunar dates appear elsewhere on the site — for religious observances — they come from the platform’s tabular calendar and are marked as approximate.
So: if your date is solar, convert it. If it is lunar, you need a source that handles crescent sighting. For the current solar year, see what year is it in the Persian calendar.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell if an Afghan date is solar or lunar?
Read the month name. Hamal, Sawr, Mizan and Hut are solar; Muharram, Safar, Ramadan and Shawwal are lunar. The two name sets have no months in common.
What is the difference between the solar and lunar Hijri year numbers?
About 43 years as of 2026 — solar 1405 against lunar 1448. Both count from the Hijra, but a lunar year is about eleven days shorter, so the lunar number has run ahead.
Is the gap between them closing?
No, it is widening. It was 36 years in 1800, 39 in 1900 and reaches about 45 by 2100, because the lunar count gains roughly a year every 33 years.
Why does the Gregorian date printed on my document not match my conversion?
On documents where the date of birth was assigned rather than recorded, the printed pair was never a conversion in the first place. Country-of-origin research describes exactly this for the Afghan paper tazkira, so a mismatch does not necessarily mean your arithmetic is wrong.
Can this site convert a lunar Hijri date?
No. It converts solar Hijri and Gregorian only. Lunar month starts depend on crescent sighting and can differ by a day between authorities, which a purely arithmetic converter cannot represent honestly.
